If vehicle sales were an election, the Ford F-series pickup would win the popular vote every year.
The F-series remained America’s best-selling vehicle in 2019, keeping a title it’s held for several decades.
But while the vehicle was the most popular model in 31 states in 2019, according to car-research site Edmunds, several other models topped the F-series in the other 19 states, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico.
And with the exception of California or Florida, every state's most popular vehicle was a pickup or an SUV.
"It just shows as a nation how truck dependent we really are," Edmunds analyst Jessica Caldwell said.
The F-series claimed the title in most of the Midwest, including Illinois, Ohio and Wisconsin, and most of the South, including Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee, according to Edmunds.
But Fiat Chrysler’s Ram pickup placed first in five states, all west of the Mississippi River, including Arkansas, Arizona and Nevada. In 2019, the Ram surpassed the Chevrolet Silverado for the first time as the nation's second-best-selling vehicle.

The Silverado, which slid to the third-most-popular vehicle in America last year, was No. 1 in Iowa and Minnesota.
And the Toyota Tacoma mid-size pickup was the most popular vehicle in Hawaii and Puerto Rico.
The Edmunds analysis was based on retail vehicle registration data, so it did not include sales to commercial customers or governments.
The Toyota RAV4 sport-utility vehicle, the most popular non-pickup in America, was the top-selling vehicle in Maryland, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Washington state and Washington, D.C.
The Honda CR-V, the automaker’s most popular vehicle, was the most popular model of any kind in Virginia, New Jersey and Connecticut.
It's no surprise that mid-size SUVs, instead of full-size pickups, topped the list in several of the nation's northeast states, Caldwell said.
"They have densely populated areas where you don't necessarily need that pickup truck," she said.

Visited California recently and thought you saw a lot of Teslas? You did.
But you might’ve seen more Honda Civics, which was the top-selling model in California last year. The Tesla Model 3 was second.
Unlike the rest of the country, where pickups and SUVs are flourishing, passenger cars of several stripes are flourishing in California. The top-five best sellers in California in 2019 were the Civic, Model 3, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and RAV4.
As of Thursday, California gas prices were the highest in the contiguous 48 states at $3.54 per gallon, nearly a dollar more than the national average of $2.60.
